Music Mondays - My Favorite Things

      This is another song I have wanted to do for a while, but always found it so overwhelming and didn't know where to begin. Well I buckled down and got it done, to the best of my abilities at least. I did have to give up and the whole doorbell and schnitzel with noodles lines, because I just couldn't find what I was looking for.

      I had to get a little creative for some of the items mentioned in the song. For those I decided to create some wall art/photos for those.In fact my non-digital mini me decided she wanted to help so she edited one of the pictures on the wall. I won't tell you which one though.

      For the girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes I chose a bride and her flower girl. Over my shoulder you can see my silver white winter melting into spring, at least my take on it, and wild geese with the moon of their wings. I also figured a sled with bells could totally count as sleigh bells, because, well it's my post and I get to say so. Onto the credits, which will be a little different this week.

Dieting Can Be Murder

“Your Honor my client pleads not guilty by reason of temporary insanity”, the public defender stated to the Judge. This was his big chance, a chance to make a name for himself by defending the accused in the trial of a lifetime. You see in this case the defendant is accused of viciously murdering her male companion. It all started on a regular Thursday evening, the accused, we will call her Phire, was busy preparing a salad for dinner. Something light and healthy, since they were both trying to get ready for a tropical beach vacation. In walked the deceased, we will call him Duncan*, chowing down on a burger. Now Phire had been sticking to their diet religiously, giving up all the things she loved, especially chocolate. Seeing Duncan eating that burger drove Phire into a rage, you could say the Phire became an inferno. Before she knew what was happening she drove the knife she was using to chop vegetables straight into Duncan’s heart.

After realizing what she has done Phire panicked, she needed to do something fast! She needed to get him out of the house and hidden.

Using all her might, Phire dragged the still warm body of Duncan out of the kitchen and into the shed in the back garden. She leaned him up in the corner of the small shed and hid his body beneath bags of fertilizer. She needed time to come up with a plan to get rid of the body...but that was not to be. So today she sits in the courtroom hoping that jury of her peers understand that dieting can be murder.

* Duncan was actually named because of a Dunkin Donuts cup I spotted in my office while trying to think of a name. This post was inspired by my being on a diet. For the record I have not murdered anyone because of it.

No Pumpkin Spice Lattes Here

      Fall is my absolute favorite season, it's when I can start wearing sweaters and cute boots. Well it used to be, now I refer to fall as "the dulling". You see I grew up in New England, but moved south where the trees only seem to turn a dull shade of green in the fall/winter. I have learned that you can take the girl out of New England, but you can't take the New England out of the girl. In my non-digital life there are scented candles that smell like an apple orchard, apple cinnamon and crisp fall leaves with a hint of dried hay. That last one I think my brain might just be adding because it fits with memories. Or I am losing it which is possible too. Now that I have blabbered on I will show off my pictures that brought this train of thought to you.

      There are a lot of coffee shops in the state I grew up in that are in converted houses. That means there are rooms all over that are usually decorated seasonally and there is at least one fireplace. Sometimes they are working, others are just there for decoration now. 

      Another thing about these little mom & pop coffee shops is that they don't write your name on the cup so there is never a worry about them butchering your name. Yeah I am looking at you Starbucks!

All the lemons

      They say when life hands you lemons you should make lemonade. The only way that lemonade is going to help is if there is something a lot stronger mixed in. Why am I mentioning this time worn saying you may wonder, well life handed me a crop of lemons in the last couple of months. No one warned my when your hip joint is inflamed that it can hurt like a monkey trucker! Sitting, walking, anything and everything hurts. Luckily it has been all handled and I can move on. Starting with this post and it's lemons.


      Honestly though if life is giving you lemons bake them into something delicious or use it for garnish on a nice strong drink. Now spring has sprung and one of my favorite yearly events is around the corner things are going to start picking up again! The one thing being stuck away from the computer has done is given me lots of ideas so beware!

Wrapping it up

      The last workshop I visited was the wrapping on and as this is my last post on the visit to the North Pole, I figured it was fitting. During this time of year there is a whole hurry up and wait thing happening. As you may be able to guess the toy making and such goes on year round. There are some things that get asked for year after year so these are some of the things that get built. Trains, bikes and the like are constantly in production as well as those toys that may take longer to make. Because so many are made the elves wrap then and store them in facilities year round. They have some sort of organizational set up that was beyond my understanding, but it was impressive. However some gifts need to be made late in the game so the wrapping elves are always on their toes, not literally of course.

      As you can see here this elf has been busy wrapping quite a few of those last minute gifts. I got to see what they were, but I am sworn to secrecy. Lets just say I know some people who will be very happy come Christmas morning. Just a short time later she was resting, waiting for the next flood of gifts to come her way.

      This is the wait part of that whole hurry up and wait thing I talked about earlier. I am sure she is still rushed off her feet wrapping more gifts for good boys and girls. Oh and if you were wondering why I only have photos of some female elves it's because they were more willing to allow me to take their photo. What's a gal to do?

Toys for each girl and boy

      While I was at the North Pole I learned something. Now I wasn't given specifics, but it appears that Santa is the biggest importer in the world. He told me he had several companies throughout the world to get the goods he needs for making every Christmas gift. It seems these businesses are "run" by elves, but they look human as to not arouse suspicion. I asked how this was possible and was again given the "Christmas Magic" excuse. It seems that they even import all natural fabrics and dyes for some of the stuffed animals. I was allowed into the toymaking training workshop. You see before the elves are allowed to move on to more complicated toys they need to master the basics, stuffed animals and wooden toys.

      As you can see the wooden toys come in a variety of ways, though it looks like someone snuck in a non-wooden toy into the workshop. Every toys gets played with for a little bit just to make sure they will hold up. The stuffed animals seem to get extra snuggles from this elf. The elves in the toy workshops all end up with tons of boxes laying around because after the toys are tested they are sent to the gift wrapping workshop before making their way into Santa's magic bag. We will see that workshop tomorrow!

Decorations Galore

      Today's adventures bring us to the Decorations Workshop. Here the elves work on creating all the decorations needed to make the season bright. The sheer amount of tinsel in this workshop was terrifying, mostly because I know what my cats would do with it, but that is a whole other story for another day.

      As you can see there are lights and ornaments galore in here, along with some other decorations for a persons home. You see there are some houses that Santa spends a little extra time in because he decorates it for the occupants. I have no idea how he finds the time to do this on top of all the presents he delivers. I asked but he just said it was " Santa Magic". I have a feeling there is more to it than that, but I wasn't about to argue, I did not what to end up on the naughty list!

      I did learn one thing while I was in this workshop, whenever an ornament is set to head off to a family an elf whispers a wish for them into it. Sometimes it's a little something, like having the merriest Christmas, but other times it can be a greater wish. Often this wish comes true, I am not sure if it is elf magic, Santa magic or what, but it works whatever it is. I will see you tomorrow when we visit the Wrapping Workshop.

Holiday Prep - Baking

      The holiday season is here and that is the reason I have been so quiet. I have also been working on another series of posts. I scoured the marketplace, yard sales and my inventory to find all the goodies in these photos. Today I will be showing you one of the baking areas of the North Pole. I got special permission from the big guy in the red suit. Of course there were some places I wasn't allowed to venture into, for instance his office where he keeps the naughty/nice list. Oh and his and Mrs. Claus' private home, but I understand that, I wouldn't want people traipsing about my home either to show to the world.

       Anyway this baking shop I checked was one of a few, the elves are always clamoring for cookies and cocoa. I don't blame them though, the cocoa I drank while there was the best ever. And the cookies! Oh my word they seemed to cater to everyone's taste.

      While I was there this elf was busy whipping up some icing for some sugar cookies she had just made. If my photos were scented this one would smell of sugar and vanilla and warmth. I am pretty sure I packed on 10 pounds just by looking at all the delicious cookies, not to mention the other sugary treats that they also make there. Tomorrow we will be taking a trip outside to check out the newest reindeer recruits!

Hippo Nightmare

      Have you ever woken up with a song stuck in your head for no reason what so ever? That's right I am talking about an earworm. Well I had one for almost a week. What song do you ask? Well I was stuck with "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas", every morning for almost a week. This was torture. I mean I love some Christmas music, but yikes this was not a song to have stuck in your head. I thought maybe taking a picture relating to the song might erase it from my brain. I am not sure if it helped, but I did finally wake up with a different song in my head, "Jingle Bells". Luckily that only lasted a day. What songs have you woken up with in your head?

Coming Soon

      If you look carefully you can see that wee pumpkin says coming soon. No it's not some sort of baby announcement, the bridge to the baby factory had been burnt to the ground. No it's just my cheeky way of saying the holiday pounds will be showing up soon. I can control myself around candy and cookies, but show me some turkey and gravy and all the yummy foods on hand for Thanksgiving and Christmas and all bets are off. Last year I made this weird stuffing/mashed potato pancake thing with cranberry sauce on top with the leftovers and it was amazing! Also this restaurant near us makes a stuffing waffle with turkey and gravy and I think mashed potatoes on top. It may sound gross but it was amazing. My mouth is watering just thinking about the foods. For now I will content myself with a peppermint mocha and some holiday movies. Hey don't judge me!

Plans change

      Living in the south I am now used to being flexible with my plans. Between the random rain storms, hurricanes and goodness knows what else it pays to be flexible. For instance moving your picnic to the living room when it is pouring out. Or when the power is out, or a fun combination of the two. Then again this isn't really just a southern thing. When I liked up north we lost power on occasion, and sometimes during the winter. Luckily we had an old fashioned wood stove that would heat up a room like nobodies business. I bought the picnic set used here for my birthday in August, finally took pictures in September and am now finally posting it. Life has a way of dictating when things get posted, but that is the way it is. Now I will present you with the credits while I go make myself a non-picnic lunch.

Too Early

      I am not a morning person, even when woken with a delivery of coffee to my face. I am cranky and irritable and will attempt to throw things if you ask me something before coffee has passed my lips. Also there is that whole morning breath thing, I wouldn't want to kiss me with stank breath what makes you think I want to kiss you? So when someone attempts to get all snuggly and cuddly I am not really down for that.



      I know that makes me sound like a terrible person and you may pity those who live with me, and I wouldn't blame you too much. I do on occasion wake up on the right side of the bed and those are the days where everyone is happy.I won't explain how me waking up on the right side of the bed makes others happy, you have imaginations, use them!
